What is Hypnosis?

People have been pondering how hypnosis

actually works for more than 200 years, but

science has only recently been able to show

how it actually happens. The invention of brain

scans with magnetic resonance imagery have

allowed us to see what parts of the brain light

up and activate when a person is in hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a trance state characterized by

extreme suggestibility, relaxation and

heightened imagination. It is not really like

sleep, because the subject is alert the whole

time. Hypnosis is most often compared to

daydreaming, or the feeling of "losing yourself"

in a book or movie. You are fully conscious,

but you tune out most of the stimuli around

you. You focus intently on the matter at hand,

to the near exclusion of any other thought.

Hypnosis is something most of us have

experienced in our everyday lives. If you have

ever been so engrossed in a book or a movie

that you didnít hear someone call your name,

you were experiencing a hypnotic trance.
